From the paper: 80 percent of the Ghanaian workforce is employed in the informal sector. The sector is characterized by underemployment, bad working conditions, uncertain work relationships and low wages. The majority of people are living with high income insecurity. The trade unions are facing major challenges to organize workers in the informal sector to ensure that the employees are working in an environment which is not harmful to them and secures their basic human needs. The topic of the paper has not been researched in detail and there is a need to act in future to ensure that the majority of the workforce in the country is not deprived."
