Online

1:30 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. CEST (GMT+2)

The International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) is celebrated on the first Saturday of July every year. The theme of the 2020 IDC was "Cooperatives for Climate Action" as linked with Sustainable Development Goal 13 on taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

On 3 July 2020, the eve of the International Day of Cooperatives, the ILO hosted a webinar on this theme as part of the ILO COOP Centenary Webinar series. This webinar aimed to highlight climate change mitigation and adaptation actions being undertaken by cooperative enterprises and their relevance in creating decent jobs.

The 1.5 hour-long webinar was targeted at ILO constituents (governments, workers’ & employers’ organizations), cooperatives and social and solidarity economy (SSE) organizations and UN and other development agencies.

Dr. Sonia M. Dias, WIEGO’s Waste Sector Specialist reflected on the contributions of waste pickers to recycling, and the decent work deficits they face including lack of occupational safety and health, social protection and limited negotiation power with public and private actors in the waste management chain.

During her presentation, she also highlighted how waste pickers’ cooperatives and other social and solidarity economy (SSE) institutions support their members in addressing these challenges. She also explored how waste picker cooperatives contribute to the reduction of GHG emission and how supporting cooperatives with infrastructure, equipment and capacity building enables them to enhance their contribution to the sustainable development goals (#SDG13).
