Climate & Waste Pickers Bulletin, issue nº 4
The Climate & Waste Pickers Bulletin summarizes the findings from monitoring activities aimed at identifying and documenting the impacts of extreme weather events on the workspaces of recycling cooperatives and waste pickers in Brazil. In this edition, the bulletin presents the case of the cooperative CONCAVES, located in the city of Belém, in northern Brazil, which was affected by a combination of strong winds and persistent rainfall in June 2025. The wind gusts caused partial roof damage to the sorting shed, worsening internal flooding and compromising both safety and production activities. Operations were suspended for several days, resulting in losses in material sales. The event exposed the structural fragility of the sorting center and the institutional challenges in preparing for climate emergencies. This initiative is part of WIEGO’s Extreme Climate Events Monitoring Project, supported by the Mãos Pro Futuro Program, which operates in six Brazilian capitals.
