How Do Public & Workplace Services Affect Workers in Informal Employment?Workers in informal employment require access to public services that are adapted to the realities of their working lives, as well as workplace services – including basic services and urban infrastructure – which account for the fact that work takes place in urban public and private spaces.
Without access to basic workplace services such as sanitation, water and electricity, and to public services such as health and child care, workers’ incomes are compromised. It is difficult to be productive in work settings that are unhealthy and are not serviced with basic inputs, such as electricity. For women working in informal employment especially, a lack of adequate access to public services close to their places of work may increase the care burden and further undermine incomes.
