Representing the part-time and contingent workforce: Challenges for unions and public policy
"The traditional employment model has begun to splinter in the United States. Long-term, full-time, direct employment with a single employer is eroding; temporary, part-time, and contracted or leased employment are growing in its stead. To respond to these changes, the labor movement must experiment with new forms of representation and venture onto unfamiliar bargaining terrain. Further, new public policies are needed: innovations in labor law to create the basis for union representation for these newly growing categories of workers and expanded employment law to guarantee them basic rights and benefits." This chapter is part of the book, "Restoring the Promise of American Labor Law", edited by Richard W. Hurd .ed, Sheldon Friedman .ed, Rudolph A. Oswald .ed, Ronald L. Seeber .ed.
