- Subtitle: Working Paper da WIEGO (Politicas Urbanas), No. 18
This paper traces back the origins of the conceptual framework Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management, and examines how this concept was appropriated in Brazil to inform activism of membership-based organizations (MBOs) and NGOs in their fight towards greater integration of waste pickers in urban solid waste systems.
It reviews the literature on waste pickers, particularly for Latin America and Brazil. Special attention is given to the role of social participation and citizenship in framing struggles of urban informal waste workers. A tentative research agenda is outlined in the paper.
