Assessing Nigeria’s Micro Pension Plan from the Perspective of Self-Employed Workers: Evidence and Policy Implications
This report reveals and analyzes the findings of a study of Nigeria’s Micro Pension Plan, which was introduced in 2019 to extend pension benefits to the country’s 77 million workers in informal employment. It evaluates the adequacy and sustainability of the Micro Pension Plan, identifies barriers to enrolment and regular contributions, and proposes evidence-based policy options for expanding coverage and improving the plan’s performance. Among the report’s recommendations is government co-contributions to self-employed workers’ savings and it demonstrates how these co-contributions could be flexibly defined to balance cost and effectiveness. A summary of the report is also available here.
