The OECD Forum on Due Diligence in the Garment and Footwear Sector is a leading international event on due diligence in the garment and footwear sector where governments, businesses, trade unions, civil society, international organizations and academia come together to discuss key and emerging labour, human rights, and environmental issues facing the sector, and how to address them.
About 90% of the workers in garment and footwear supply chains work informally – within small, unregistered factories, at home, or collecting and sorting waste for recycling. Despite their contributions to global production and circular systems, these workers often fall outside formal monitoring and protection frameworks.
On February 12, at 2pm CET, experts in the panel “The missing millions: Due diligence in informal settings” will explore how to promote corporate accountability for waste pickers and homeworkers who work in informal workplaces. Panellists, including WIEGO’s Allison Corkery, Janhavi Dave from HomeNet International and Brian Gisore Nyabuti from the International Alliance of Waste Pickers, will discuss strategies for organizing workers in informal employment in this sector, and tailoring due diligence to the specific risks and realities faced by them. The panellists will also share insights from their engagement with workers to promote corporate accountability, as well as examples of national laws and frameworks aimed at improving protections and working conditions.
