Rethinking Informalization: Poverty, Precarious Jobs and Social Protection
This volume includes a large portion of papers initially presented at the conference, Rethinking Informalization in Labor Markets, which took place at Cornell University in October 2002. The objective of the conference was to bring together academics, researchers, and practitioners working on issues of labor market informalization, urban informality, poverty, and social protection with the purpose of discussing these issues as they were unfolding at the dawn of the new century. We brought together an inter disciplinary group that could approach these questions from different angles and experiences with a focus on different geographical areas. This collection represents many of the papers presented at the conference, though the gathering also included other participants who enriched the debates and discussions. WIEGO's Martha Chen contributed a chapter titled, "Rethinking the informal economy: From enterprise characteristics to employment relations".
