Recovering resources, creating opportunities: Integrating the informal sector into solid waste management

By , , on January 01, 2011

The experiences presented in this report show that the integration of informal workers in solid waste management systems is possible and that it can contribute significantly to development objectives. Therefore, it is important that the current and potential contribution of the informal workers be analysed in processes of reforming solid waste management systems. They should be taken into account
in waste management planning, designing infrastructure and establishing partnerships for efficient waste management. German international cooperation’s experiences can offer helpful indications for approaches and measures that facilitate a successful and sustainable integration of informal stakeholders in integrated solid waste management.

Sonia Dias authored several sections including "Recognition of Waste Picking as a Profession in Brazil and Its Impacts" and "Strengthening Waste Picker Organisations"
