Climate & Waste Pickers Bulletin, issue nº 6
The Climate & Waste Pickers Bulletin summarizes the findings of monitoring activities carried out to identify and document the impacts of extreme weather events on the workspaces of cooperatives and waste pickers in Brazil.
In this edition, the bulletin highlights the impacts of a torrential rainfall event that affected Belo Horizonte between March 6 and 7, 2026, directly impacting the Coopesol Leste cooperative. According to INMET, 111.2 mm of rainfall were recorded in just a few hours, equivalent to 62% of the expected monthly total, combined with strong winds and a possible microburst. The event exposed critical structural vulnerabilities in the facility, including water infiltration, internal flooding, and risks to electrical equipment, leading to temporary interruptions of activities, reduced productivity, and damage to recyclable materials, especially paper and cardboard, resulting in loss of value and income. The bulletin also highlights the absence of structured adaptation measures, with responses occurring in a reactive manner, reinforcing the urgent need for structural improvements and climate adaptation strategies to protect waste picker
