In 2003 the Ghanaian government introduced, a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) – an, innovative and large scale attempt to extend, social protection to informal workers.
Ghana's NHIS may hold important policy lessons for other countries where the informal economy is large and growing, and where informal workers are excluded from formal social protection.
