The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS), in partnership with Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO), will host a roundtable on the regulation of the platform economy in South Africa.
The roundtable is being convened ahead of the International Labour Conference (ILC)’s forthcoming standard-setting discussion on “Realizing decent work in the platform economy“. At the ILC in June, delegates will debate the adoption of an international labour standard to regulate employment on digital labour platforms. The roundtable will therefore bring together key stakeholders from government, labour, and academia to engage on the regulation of digital labour platforms and the advancement of decent work in South Africa. The discussion will feature inputs from the National E-Hailing Federation of South Africa (NEFSA), the Department of Employment and Labour, the Department of Transport, and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation(DSTI) and will be co-chaired by Ruth Castel-Branco (SCIS) and Pat Horn (WIEGO).
Speakers:
- Omar Parker – General Secretary: National E-Hailing Federation of South Africa
- Stephen Rathai – Director: Employment Standards, Department of Employment and Labour
- Muzi Simelane – Director: Department of Transport
- Llanely Simpson – Director: Department of Science, Technology and Innovation
