The International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) is hosting its annual conference, with WIEGO specialists contributing to panel discussions on childcare for workers in informal employment, and the social and solidarity economy (SSE).
On July 8-11, scholars, activists, policymakers, practitioners and students will gather at Universidad ICESI in Cali, Colombia to tackle questions including care, labour, sustainability and economic justice.
Key events for WIEGO
La Economía Social y Solidaria como Resistencia y Transformación (The Social and Solidarity Economy as Resistance and Transformation) – Thursday 9 July | 3.25-4.55pm | Venue: 204D
WIEGO’s Federico Parra will chair a panel on the way the SSE offers alternative formalization strategies that would better support women workers in informal employment, who are disproportionately concentrated in its most precarious and poorly-paid sectors.
The discussion will explore how models such as cooperatives, associations and community organizations can create collective solutions where both markets and states have proven inadequate.
Panelists will discuss the contributions of the social and solidarity economy to gender equity, analyse research experience in feminist economics, and the experiences of Brazilian women workers in solidarity-based enterprises.
Speakers:
- Letícia Pereira.
- Natalia Flores Garrido, Senior Program Officer, Gender and Economics for Latin America and the Caribbean, IDEAs.
- Lara Campoli, Pre-doctoral researcher at the University of Barcelona.

Assessing Childcare Models for workers in informal employment: methodological innovations and lessons from India and Colombia – Friday 10 July | 11.00-12.30pm | Venue: 101D
This panel introduces the Three-Level Framework (3LF) for evaluating childcare models, which was developed by WIEGO in collaboration with UN Women.
The 3LF is a tool that compares childcare models and assesses which ones come closest to a ‘triple win’ for children, parents and workers. It evaluates childcare by examining:
- Policy results: what childcare arrangements actually deliver for children, parents and caregivers
- Policy architecture: the eligibility rules, funding mechanisms and workforce regulations for childcare services.
- Societal influences: assesses childcare services in light of broader systems of inequality, such as socio-economic status and inclusiveness for children with diverse needs.
Panelists will discuss the origin and development of the 3LF, do an in-depth discussion of how it works, and share insights from the framework’s application in India and Colombia.
