The Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) is a national trade union of women workers in India’s informal economy. Founded in 1972, it organizes self-employed women across a wide range of occupations and works to strengthen their rights, bargaining power and livelihood security. SEWA’s approach centers on full employment and self-reliance, combining worker organization with efforts to improve income, food and social security, including access to health care, child care, insurance, pensions and shelter.
