Climate & Waste Pickers Bulletin, issue nº 5
The Climate & Waste Pickers Bulletin summarizes the findings of monitoring activities carried out to identify and document the impacts of extreme weather events on the workspaces of cooperatives and waste pickers in Brazil.
In this edition, the bulletin highlights the effects of the heatwave that struck Manaus between August 19 and 26, 2025, directly affecting the ASCARMAN and Nova Recicla associations. Temperatures exceeded 36°C, with thermal sensation reaching 40°C, further aggravating the already inadequate conditions of the sorting centers, characterized by poor ventilation and metal roofing. Among the main impacts observed were thermal discomfort, heat-related physical symptoms, reduced productivity, increased absences, and the need to shorten the workday. The bulletin underscores how extreme heat events compromise health, income, and the continuity of activities, highlighting the urgency of climate adaptation measures and structural improvements to protect waste pickers.
