Caring Cities in a Warming World: Building Climate-Resilient Infrastructure for Workers in Informal Employment
This WIEGO contribution to the GOLD VII Report explores how cities can integrate care principles into climate adaptation and urban infrastructure planning to protect workers in informal employment. Drawing on experiences from Brazil’s Acamares Waste Pickers’ Cooperative and HomeNet Thailand, the publication demonstrates how worker organizations co-design both “hard” and “soft” infrastructures, such as upgraded sorting centers, social networks, and public health systems, to strengthen resilience and inclusion. The article proposes actionable policy pathways for local governments to embed care, equity, and worker participation in climate and urban policies.
