WIEGO’s Tania Espinosa Sanchez has been awarded the Hermila Galindo and Ifigenia Martínez Medal of Merit from the Mexico City Congress.

The Medal of Merit was awarded to seven women and two organizations for their contributions to gender equality and the defense of women's rights.

Tania, the Latin America Coordinator for WIEGO’s Law Programme, was recognized for her work defending the rights of women workers in the informal economy and advocating for international standards and the recognition of decent work and social security.

“It is an honour to receive this acknowledgement, and a privilege to be working alongside the thousands of women workers in informal employment who deserve safe and just working conditions,” she said.

“We have much left to achieve, and I believe by keeping Mexico City’s women workers at the center of our work, we can continue to make social change a reality.”

President of the Gender Equality Commission and congresswoman Cecillia Vadillo Obregón, said that the work of women and collectives are the fruit of ancestral struggles and knowledge. And sisterhood is a driving force for advancing women’s rights.

Tania joined WIEGO in 2015 and was appointed Focal Cities Coordinator for Mexico City in 2017, where she accompanied several movements of workers in informal employment.

In 2023 she was appointed Latin America Coordinator for the Law Programme. Tania currently leads work to articulate the working conditions of waste pickers - and other workers in informal employment - as human rights violations.
