VIDEO: Right to the City and Privatization

The privatization of waste management and introduction of municipal policies which restrict access to waste can have a negative impact on waste pickers. Through interviews with the geographer David Harvey and Montevideo waste pickers Méndez, Alejandro and Víctor, the video analyzes the social, environmental and economic implications of political decisions which restrict access to recyclable waste and their impact on waste pickers. The video has a particular focus on closed waste containers. This video was produced by WIEGO in collaboration with the University of Uruguay UDELAR and the, "Beyond Waste" project SCEAM-CSIC. Interviews were conducted by Lucia Fernandez of WIEGO.
