Delhi India Maken urges LG to stop eviction of street vendors India.com . (14 July 2017)

A delegation led by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) President Ajay Maken on Friday met Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal and urged him not to evict any more street. The delegation, which included members of the National Association of Street Vendors of India, Street Vendors Associations of Delhi and senior Congress leaders, also submitted a memorandum to the Lt. Governor on “harassment” being faced by the street vendors.

Last year, when the squatters were removed before Independence Day, members of Footpath Traders Association, Lajpat Nagar, associated with the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), had questioned the removal of squatters and hawkers as illegal as per the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. As per the law, the government had to prepare a Town Vending Committee to conduct a survey of all the existing street vendors.

Under the ‘Project Serve Safe Food under the Safe and Nutrition Food  & Street Food’, the State FDA had trained around 1400 street food vendors in association with CSR partner, Nestle India Limited and NASVI (National Association of Street Vendors of India). Street food vendors were imparted special skill development training in the good sanitary and hygienic practices.

The council then attempted to confiscate, and destroy, all perishable food items that were being hawked in the central business district. Many vendors fought back, resulting in deadly clashes over a series of days in the opposition run capital city.  Sadly, such violent treatment of workers in informal markets is all too common in African cities."
