The impacts of the pandemic have exposed the large-scale vulnerabilities faced by workers in the informal economy, including the lack of adequate social protection coverage. Despite facing greater risks of falling into poverty than workers in the formal economy, informal workers are excluded from employment-linked social insurance and also from most poverty targeted social assistance interventions.
At this webinar, sector experts discussed the characteristics of the informal economy in Asia and Africa, the challenges in expanding social protection coverage and the efforts of organizations of informal workers to promote inclusive social protection for informal workers.
