Savings, Credit and Solidarity: Collective Tools for Workers in Informal Employment – A Step-by-Step Guide
This step-by-step guide, available in English and Spanish, is part of a toolkit that includes a comic in English, French and Spanish.
Street vendors and market traders face challenges every day, from unsafe working conditions to limited access to financial services. Yet across the world, workers are showing that by organizing in solidarity, they can strengthen their collective power and shape better futures for themselves and their families.
This guide, developed by WIEGO and StreetNet International, was created with workers and for workers. It draws on workers’ experiences, their lessons and their solutions. A central focus of the guide is solidarity-based savings and credit systems, one of the strongest examples of how the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) is taking root in organizations of workers in informal employment.
The guide offers:
- Practical lessons on cooperatives and collective models rooted in the SSE
- Examples from vendor organizations around the world
- Step-by-step tools to build basic solidarity savings and credit systems and improve income security
