WIEGO and our partners in Brazil and India undertook preliminary research and stakeholder engagement to refine research objectives, identify policy pathways and develop the research design. In both countries, a literature review and preliminary research with women workers in informal employment was undertaken.
This culminated with inception workshops which aimed to deepen understanding of workers’ experiences with the Brazilian and Indian health systems, explore popular demands related to health and safety at work and discuss possible action strategies to strengthen the public health systems.
In Brazil, a two-day multi-stakeholder workshop was held in March 2025 in Salvador. It was well attended by workers from different worker groups, the ministry of health representatives, researchers and academicians. In India, a state roundtable and a national roundtable were held in April, 2025 in Ahmedabad and Delhi respectively. The roundtables saw participation from the ministry of labour and health, worker union groups, civil society organizations.
