WIEGO at UN-Habitat's 24th Session of the Governing Council

Sonia Dias presents at UNACLA 2013Sonia Dias, WIEGO's Waste Picker Sector Specialist, was invited to speak at UN-Habitat's 24th session of the Governing Council in April, 2013. Held in Nairobi, Kenya, the event featured a session for the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities (UNACLA), where mayors and other local authorities from all regions of the world came together to discuss job creation and local productivity.

Sonia, who is based in Brazil, was invited because of her vast experience with waste pickers and WIEGO's worldwide activity that focuses on an often unrecognized source of employment─the informal economy.

Her talk was well received, and generated interest in WIEGO’s work and opportunities for future involvement and collaboration.

In Kenya, Sonia also visited informal workers’ projects. WIEGO member partner KENASVIT  took her to a dump, where she spoke with women waste pickers and explored how they had participated in the Inclusive Cities Informal Economy Monitoring Study
