Web Technical Specialist

WIEGO has two key website roles: a Web Curator/Editor and a Web Technical Specialist. The person in this Technical Specialist role is responsible for the technical management, monitoring and development of WIEGO’s online presence, including a Drupal-based website and multiple WordPress-based sites.

This position manages site administration and day-to-day, mid-and long-term website projects; including developing new features; maintaining content on our sites; and coordinating outside contractors, as required. The person also monitors and analyzes data in order to optimize digital communications.

Duties for this role include:

  • Manage the technical side of web projects from planning to execution.
  • Maintain and make updates and enhancements to wiego.org, espanol.wiego.org, our interactive dashboard and appropriate subdomains/microsites, including developing new features, bug fixes, changing look and positioning of elements, migrating sites from one server to another and building new pages, based on the agreed strategy.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to prioritize web updates, set expectations, and understand requirements.
  • Maintain and make incremental updates to our intranet, including adding new functionality as needed.
  • Analyze website metrics and key performance indicators to constantly test and refine web products and features, and provide project status updates on a weekly basis.
  • Manage user permissions and assist with ongoing content edits and entry.
  • Ensure the use of best practices and apply lessons learned from previous projects.
  • Manage/oversee work of additional development contractors (when necessary).
  • Train and support team members on use of Drupal content management system (CMS).
  • Provide quality control of content on website as it relates to technical formatting, layout, style and coding.
  • Research and advise on methods of increasing traffic to WIEGO’s online offerings , including Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques including schema tags and performance optimization.
  • Manage domains including configuring nameservers and DNS, setting up subdomains, adding & monitoring security (e.g.. SSL certificates)
  • Provide training to new and current content administrators of the website
  • Research and incorporate evolving web technology and web publishing advances
  • Investigate, advise on and incorporate new functionality to improve WIEGO’s overall online communication offering as required.

Technology requirements:

  • 5+ years practical experience in development of Drupal 7 & 8 websites.
  • Practical experience in creating and developing custom Drupal modules using PHP.
  • Practical experience in design and developing service interfaces and system integration in Drupal to/from external systems and web services.
  • 3+ years practical experience in development of Wordpress sites, including migrating Wordpress sites to Drupal 7.
  • Experience managing Drupal and WordPress environments
  • Knowledge of Drupal and WordPress adjunct programming languages: PHP, HTML5, CSS3, jQuery/JavaScript
  • Experience setting-up and maintaining intranets.
  • Solid understanding of navigation and GUI for maximizing UI usability.
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding web/social media/email marketing interfaces.

Additional Requirements:

  • Goal-oriented and self-directed.
  • Good interpersonal communications skills, including ability to work in a virtual network, across time zones and with people from all cultures.
  • Attention to detail a must.
  • Good understanding of usability design.
  • Fluent English plus ideally either French or Spanish at the intermediate level.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations and/or grassroots/ community-based organizations.
  • Enthusiasm for serving a global social movement.
