Remembering Joe Holly

Joe Holly

27 July 1952 – 27 November 2018

It was with great sadness that WIEGO learned of the passing of Dr. Joe Holly this past week.

Joe served as WIEGO Company Secretary from 2007 to 2015. He played a key role in the registration of WIEGO as a not-for-profit company and (later) a charity based in the UK.

WIEGO will always be indebted to Joe for helping us establish our organization in the UK with an office in Manchester and, more specifically, helping us draw up our Articles of Association, understand and comply with the rules and regulations for not-for-profit companies and charities in the UK, and set up and manage a centre of international operations in the UK. He brought his considerable network and relationships to bear for WIEGO as we became rooted in Manchester, and shared his love of that city’s labour and political history with us.

The WIEGO Board and Team will always remember Joe’s good humour. Joe had a gift for dry wit. His frequent humourous observations would always make us chuckle, often at ourselves, and he helped foster a positive working culture during a time of growth and change for our organization. He was a kind man, as well as smart and committed, and left a hole in the UK office when he left due to deteriorating health.

Team retreat Endicott 2012We admired the strength and grace with which Joe faced having ALS. We were relieved to learn that he continued to enjoy a pint at his favorite pub, the Star, in Glossop – where everyone knows and loves him – until very near the end.

And we admired how Joe and his family – wife Annie, daughter Lucy, son Liam, son-in-law Jack, daughter-in-law Vicky and grandson George – coped with his illness, focusing on their times together rather than dwelling on what was lost. Our thoughts are with them, and with Joe’s many friends in Manchester, as they mourn his passing and celebrate his life.

Thank you, Joe. We raise a glass of the Pride of Pendle in your honour.
