Alleging harassment and indiscriminate action against the hawkers during the ongoing SC-mandated anti-encroachment drive, National Association of Street Vendors - umbrella body of street vendors -has called for a protest rally and a day-long bandh on street vending on Monday.

Street vendors in Maharashtra are being given hygiene lessons in a collaborative effort from Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration and the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI).

What brings them together is a cooperative called the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), a network and advocacy platform of 636 street vendor organisations representing 8,67,426 vendors across 25 states of India. A vendor is anyone who buys or sells a service from temporary or non-pucca structures.

Then, after a decade of struggle by the National Association of Street Vendors of India and the Self Employed Women’s Association, the Protection of Livelihoods and Regulation of Street Vending (PLRSV) Bill was signed into a law in 2014. Despite its obvious limitations, this was a major victory for street vendors.

The food court will have 50 stalls set up by the States/ UTs each showcasing their distinctive cuisine, the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) with street food from different regions as well as by the Institutes of Hotel Management and ITDC.

While the vendors have welcomed the government's decision to hold elections for TVCs at the earliest, they want the LG and government stop the forcible removal of vendors.
