Waste pickers provide a critical environmental service, extracting recyclable goods from the waste stream and preventing them from accumulating in landfills and dump sites. And domestic workers clean, cook and sometimes care for children or the elderly in private homes.

They are always overlooked when policy decisions are taken by the authorities. To put forward their plight, ragpickers from across the city gathered for a novel hearing on Tuesday. Their concerns included structural stumbling blocks like lack of identity cards, addition of hazardous waste in domestic garbage, and no anganwadis for their children, among other issues. The meeting was attended by senior corporation officials, NGOs and Member of Parliament from New Delhi, Meenakshi Lekhi.

SWaCH (Solid Waste Collection and Handling ) is India’s first wholly-owned cooperative of self-employed waste pickers or waste collectors. It is based in Pune and was started with an intention to provide livelihood to those working in this sector.


An avid gamer and a hockey player, 16-year-old Omkar Waghmare scored 76.2 per cent in SSC, results of which were announced on Tuesday. An aspiring software engineer, this Pimpri resident is the eldest son of Vijayabai, a single mother who works as a wastepicker with Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat.

Experts are divided on the role of third party between citizens and the civic body in garbage management when the Pune Municipal Corporation is drafting a 'concrete' plan to manage the city's trash.

Named Kartavya Pragati, the waste collection centre was recently upgraded with the joint efforts of Sweep Smart, a waste management social enterprise from the Netherlands, Hasiru Dala, a membership-based organisation of waste pickers and informal waste workers, Eco Echo and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP).

Gujarat high court on Monday directed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to integrate poor waste pickers in its solid waste collection process, and to form a policy of solid waste management within six months.
