On Friday, the Sarojini Nagar market in South Delhi was missing its famous bustle. There were far fewer street vendors, thinner crowds, no jostling and none of the usual liveliness.

The future of street shopping at Sarojini Nagar, Janpath, Connaught Place and all commercial centres of Lutyens’ Delhi is now uncertain, with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) planning on removing illegal vendors. Through encroachment removal drives and voluntary action by vendors, the usually-busy “export market” at Sarojini Nagar has already been removed.
