Qatar has approved a draft law which would provide legal protection for tens of thousands of female domestic workers for the first time, according to state media. The law is expected to specify how many hours staff such as nannies, drivers and gardeners should work per week, how many days holiday they receive annually and how they are paid, reported the Qatar News Agency (QNA).

The Department of Labor and Employment is mulling the suspension of deployment of Filipino household workers to Kuwait. This followed last Wednesday’s execution of a Filipina worker convicted of killing her employer’s daughter in 2007. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said they would consult with other government agencies and stakeholders on the implementation of a moratorium.

Tighter rules, both at home and abroad, regarding hiring of domestic workers are having an impact on the Sultanate's demography. The number of Ethiopian and Indonesians workers living in Oman dropped sharply in 2016. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the number of Ethiopian workers fell from 24,009 in December 2015 to 16,673 at the end of December 2016.
