Job Description

This is a temporary position for a human rights expert who has strong knowledge of the Inter-American Human Rights System, particularly the Inter-American Commission on Hu-man Rights’ standards and sentences by the Inter-American Court, with particular focus on economic, social and environmental rights. The aim of this consultancy is to work collabora-tively with the WIEGO project coordinator to write/co-author a final report on waste pickers’ human rights conditions in six Latin American countries, as well as constructing legal argu-ments for a solid final report.  The report will form the basis of an application for a hearing at the Inter-American Commission.

The legal expert is expected to work in close collaboration with the project coordinator. This temporary position requires up to 15-20 days of work.

Tasks for the human rights expert

- Analyze informal waste pickers’ human rights in Latin America

-  Conduct research on the jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court, with a specific focus on labour, economic, social and environmental rights

-  Co-author chapters of the report with the project coordinator

-  Assist with constructing the legal strategy and formulating arguments 

-  Attend meetings with waste pickers and attend the waste pickers' workshop that will take place in Mexico City in May 

Requirements

 

  • Bachelor´s degree and post-graduate degree in law
  • Strong knowledge of the Inter-American Human Rights System, especially the jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
  • 5 years of experience constructing legal arguments based on international human rights standards, particularly in economic, social and environmental rights
  • Knowledge of labour rights will be considered an asset
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Punctuality with deadlines
  • Preferably oral & written English
  • Live in Mexico City

 

Timeframe

This position starts as soon as possible and ends April 25, 2019.
