Publications: Social Protection Front CoverStreet traders are a very visible part of the South African economy, yet little has been written for them or for those involved in the development and management of street trading. This book fills this gap. Although it is primarily for street trader organisations and for local government officials and councillors, it will be useful for all those whose work interacts with this part of South Africa’s informal economy.

Street Trading is about the working lives of street traders: their problems, their organisations, the laws which govern them and the officials who work with them and who carry out these laws. The book is richly illustrated with photographs and with the stories of traders and the thoughts of officials, as they engage with the process of local government transformation that is taking place in South Africa.
