Workers Narrative 2019 - Women Speak

WIEGO in partnership with the India Habitat Centre, organized a second edition of the Workers’ Narrative. Coined Women Speak, it was held  on 7 March 2019, the eve of International Women's Day, and drew scores of informal workers from across Delhi. Six women workers from Delhi, representing different sectors, were the feature presenters. They spoke candidly on their aspirations and dreams as home-based workers, street vendors, construction workers and waste pickers as well as well as the challenges that they face in their daily struggle to survive in this city.

Panellists included: 

  • Usha Behn, street vendor, SEWA
  • Jagruti Devi, waste picker, Bal Vikas Dhara
  • Sitara-bibi, a home-based worker affiliated with the Centre for Equity and Inclusion (CEQUIN)
  • Savitha, home-based worker, from resettlement colony - Mahila Housing Trust
  • Guruvari-bai, a retired construction worker and member of Nirmana Mazdoor Panchayat Sangam
  • Geeta-ben, a domestic worker affiliated with Jagori
  • The panel was moderated by Harvard University Professor and WIEGO Senior Advisor, Dr. Marty Chen.
