Opportunities for green jobs in the waste sector

The International Trade Centre (ITC) hosted a 5-day workshop on Opportunities for green jobs in the waste sector, from November 12-16, 2018 where representatives of national and local government; social partners; professionals and entrepreneurs from the waste sector; national and international development agencies; civil society organizations and academics were in attendance.

The course examined the potential for decent work promotion and green business development across the waste value chain, focusing on waste collection, sorting and recycling. The following topics were addressed during this workshop:

  • Understanding the waste challenge and finding value in it
  • Creating decent jobs in the waste sector
  • Unlocking new opportunities across the waste hierarchy
  • Orienting actions and strategies at national, local and institutional levels

Similarly, the contributions made by workers in the informal economy, and on unlocking jobs in the waste sector were a key focus of this course.
